She met the Padgett family and Oliva Owens when she moved in, and somewhat to her surprise, was expecting a baby with Hopkins, the grandfather in the Padgett family, almost immediately. She didn't have enough money to pay her rent, and Hopkins moved in to help, but didn't have much money to contribute either. Zaria worked as hard as she could to finish her latest novel, but her computer broke. With no money to buy another, she attempted to fix it, but got electrocuted and died. Hopkins is now trying to raise their baby, Hortense, on his own as well as he can. He has sold all the furniture, and even the dishwasher and trash compactor, to raise some money to pay their rent, but he can't go out to work with a toddler at home. They had only 42 Simoleons to their name, but he couldn't resist spending 30 of them to buy a cake for Hortense at her birthday.

Sims get electrocuted fixing things all the time, and normally don't die from it. I suspect this happened because all of Zaria's needs were so low - food, social, sleep, etc. Hopkins is an elder and will probably die soon; it will be interesting to see if Hortense is a teen by then and continues on in the apartment, or if she will be a child and the social worker comes to get her.
When a Sim asks another Sim to "Move In", the Sim always brings some cash with them. If it's an NPC or townie, the amount is predetermined and varies according to the social class of the Sim. (Townies come in several flavours - for example, socialites and gearheads.) When it's another playable Sim, the amount is determined by some factors I haven't quite figured out, but seems clearly to be linked to either the cash on hand or net worth of the household they come from.
