TV: Queer Eye

This recent reboot of the 2003 reality show has quickly become a favourite of mine.  I thought it might be a bit shallow to hold my interest, but the Fab Five really do focus on the bigger picture and boosting the confidence of the people they work with.  If you enjoy the personalities, you'll love the show.

The title of the first episode, "You Can't Fix Ugly", took me aback.  But that turns out to be a quote from the subject of that episode, and by the end of the hour he's not calling himself ugly anymore.  Even in the opening of the first episode, they set the tone by showing the guys being nervous about starting filming.

Scores and comments for:
Queer Eye
Passes Bechdel test:  Disappointingly, no, but since it's a reality TV show where five guys do makeovers, even if the subject is female, there don't tend to be a lot of conversations between women.
Diversity:  The whole point of the show is acceptance of people who are gay, so it scores high for me here.  In season 2 they do branch out to women and make a point of including trans subjects.
HAES-friendly:  I'm a bit on the fence about this.  I was impressed that never once do they suggest someone lose weight, but there is some food policing and judgement from Antoni in pretty much every episode.  Tan's goal is to dress the bodies of real people, and he's pretty gentle and respectful about it.

As of July 2019 it's available on Netflix Canada.
