TV: Drop Dead Diva

Drop Dead Diva is an odd little show, one that I think managed to fly under everybody's radar.  The premise would probably make anybody blink; a thin model dies and comes back to earth in the body of a fat lawyer.  It's pretty-and-stupid versus ugly-and-smart writ large, but somehow the show managed to keep me hooked through six seasons.  I credit Broadway star Brooke Elliott for that, making Deb/Jane into a multi-faceted, lovable character.  Margaret Cho as her assistant helps the show along immensely too.

If you enjoy season 1, stick it out to the end... seasons 5 and 6 get progressively nuttier and more hilarious.  There are only 78 episodes in total.

Scores and comments for:
Drop Dead Diva
Passes Bechdel test:  Yes; within the first couple of minutes, Jane, Teri, and Kim discuss a case.
Diversity:  Typical for a prime-time show, which is to say, not great.
HAES-friendly:  Sort of.  Right from the opening scenes, the damaging myth that thin people eat "healthy" and fat people eat "unhealthy" is on display, and is brought up often in the show.  The show has to tackle fat-phobia head-on as the formerly rail-thin Deb finds herself in the plus-size Jane's body.  They may not always navigate it in the best way, and I wouldn't recommend watching this if you're early in your HAES journey.

As of July 2019 this is on Netflix Canada.
