Autism in Women (part 2)

This article from Spectrum News on a study of autistic women has interesting information.

  • struggles in childhood labeled as awkwardness or anxiety (or shyness?)
  • high rates of sexual abuse
  • tend to be experts in camouflaging - pretending not to have autism
  • there is no test for camouflaging

Then this article talks about sensory processing disorder (SPD).

  • sensory differences were part of the first descriptions of autism, but then were dropped
  • one study found atypical white matter in the brain of boys with SPD
  • children need help with their with their sensory differences - whether they are overwhelmed by their senses or find it hard to connect with them
